Why Your Brain Shapes Your Money Decisions (More Than You Think) 💥

How Your Brain Shapes Your Money Decisions | RAS & Money Mindset

Have you ever decided to buy a particular car… and then suddenly you see that exact model everywhere?

Or learned a new word and, almost overnight, everyone seems to be saying it?

No, the universe isn't sending you secret messages.

Well… probably not.

You're experiencing something far more fascinating.

It's called your Reticular Activating System (RAS).

Think of it as your brain's personal spotlight operator.

Every second of every day, your senses are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information. If your brain tried to process every sound, sight, smell and conversation, you'd be exhausted before breakfast.

So your RAS steps in.

Its job is simple.

It decides what gets your attention… and what fades into the background.

Here's the interesting part.

Your RAS doesn't decide what's true.

It decides what's important.

And it works that out based on what you've repeatedly focused on, experienced, believed and, perhaps most importantly, the story you've been telling yourself.

Yes... your brain is listening to your self-talk.

So, what does this have to do with money?

Everything.

If you've spent years saying:

"I'm hopeless with money."

"I'm just not good with numbers."

"I always make bad financial decisions."

"I'll never have enough."

Your RAS becomes exceptionally efficient at proving you right.

It notices every financial mistake.

Every unexpected bill.

Every impulse purchase.

Every investment you didn't make.

Every reason to doubt yourself.

It's like having a personal assistant whose only job is collecting evidence for the prosecution.

Helpful?

Not even slightly.

Meanwhile, your brain quietly filters out all the evidence that you're actually becoming more capable.

That you've paid off debt.

Started saving.

Asked better questions.

Read another book.

Made smarter decisions.

Learnt something new.

Your progress is happening…

…but your brain isn't giving it much airtime because it doesn't match the story it's been told to look for.

Here's where it gets really exciting.

Your RAS isn't sitting inside your head with a tiny toolbox rewiring your brain.

That's not its job.

It simply shines the spotlight.

The rewiring happens through neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is your brain's remarkable ability to create new neural pathways throughout your life.

Every time you think differently…

learn something new…

have an emotional breakthrough…

or repeatedly practise a new behaviour…

your brain strengthens those pathways.

The more often you travel that road, the easier it becomes.

Which is wonderful news.

Because if your brain learned one Money Story…

it can absolutely learn another.

But where did your Money Story begin?

For most of us…

long before we earned our first dollar.

It started with the messages we heard growing up.

"Money doesn't grow on trees."

"We're not wealthy people."

"Rich people are greedy."

"You'll never get ahead."

We didn't question those messages.

Children rarely do.

We simply absorbed them.

Over time, those repeated messages became our Money Mindset.

But there's another layer that often flies under the radar.

Money Blocks.

Money Blocks aren't simply beliefs.

They're emotional imprints.

The sting of criticism.

The shame of getting it wrong.

Fear.

Rejection.

Disapproval.

Feeling unsafe.

Being told you weren't good enough.

These experiences don't just shape your thinking.

They can shape how your brain responds whenever money enters the conversation.

When childhood experiences involve ongoing stress or trauma, the brain often becomes highly alert for danger.

That can show up years later as:

  • overthinking every financial decision
  • avoiding money altogether
  • constantly expecting something to go wrong
  • doubting yourself before you've even begun.

Sound familiar?

You're certainly not alone.

The good news?

Your brain is wonderfully adaptable.

It remains capable of change throughout your entire life.

Therapeutic approaches—including hypnosis—can help create the conditions for new learning.

When they're combined with awareness, emotional processing and repeated practice, old patterns begin to soften while healthier neural pathways become stronger.

In other words…

your past may explain your Money Story…

but it doesn't have to keep writing it.

This is how real change happens.

As you become aware of old patterns…

challenge limiting beliefs…

build your financial knowledge…

and practise making confident money decisions…

your brain gradually starts paying attention to different things.

Instead of problems…

you notice possibilities.

Instead of mistakes…

you notice progress.

Instead of evidence you can't trust yourself…

you begin collecting evidence that you can.

That's your RAS doing exactly what it was designed to do.

This is why changing your Money Story isn't about positive thinking.

It's not about sticking affirmations on your bathroom mirror while secretly panicking every time you open your banking app.

It's about teaching your brain what deserves your attention.

Because what you repeatedly focus on…

shapes what you notice.

What you notice…

influences the decisions you make.

And those decisions…

shape your financial future.

That's exactly why I created the Money Makeover Program.

Real financial change doesn't happen because someone hands you a budget spreadsheet.

Nor does it happen by reading one inspirational quote on social media.

It happens when you change the way you think, feel and behave around money.

The Money Makeover Program brings together the three ingredients that create lasting change:

Money EQ – understanding your relationship with money and the mindset you've developed.

Money IQ – building the financial knowledge and confidence you were probably never taught at school.

Money Blocks – identifying and releasing the subconscious beliefs and emotional patterns that continue to influence your financial decisions.

As you move through the Program, you create your own Money Story Audit™.

Your Audit reveals the Money Story you've been living.

It uncovers the patterns keeping you stuck.

It highlights strengths you may not even realise you have.

It identifies the financial knowledge that's missing.

And perhaps most importantly…

it shows your brain what deserves its attention next.

Because once your RAS starts looking for possibilities instead of problems…

everything begins to feel different.

Thank goodness for neuroplasticity.

It means your brain is never too old…

never too set in its ways…

and never beyond learning something new.

So, if you've spent years believing you're "bad with money"…

perhaps it's time to question that belief.

Maybe you're not bad with money at all.

Maybe your brain has simply become incredibly good at running a Money Story it learned many years ago.

And here's the best part.

Stories aren't set in stone.

They can be questioned.

They can be challenged.

They can be rewritten.

And when you rewrite your Money Story… you begin rewriting your financial future.

Much love,

Jan 🐚
