Responsibility, Discipline & Accountability: Why They Trigger Resistance Around Money (and What It’s Really Costing You)💥

Have you ever had a moment you suddenly see something about yourself clearly?

A behaviour.
A habit.
A pattern you hadn’t really noticed before.

That moment of awareness is powerful.💥

Carl Jung said it best:

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."

In other words, what we don’t see about ourselves runs the show.

Awareness [Conscious] Creates a Choice.

The moment something comes to our awareness, we are presented with a choice:

Do we ignore it? Or do we act on it?

Maybe it’s a behaviour you want to change. Maybe it’s a pattern you’ve been repeating for years. But awareness alone doesn’t create change, it simply gives you the opportunity to choose differently.

And making that choice requires a map. A clear path from where you are now to where you want to be. Without it, we drift. With it, we have direction.

But even a map isn’t enough. To move from intention to reality, we need structure.

Structure brings strategies, action steps, and plans. But at the core of meaningful change sit three essential qualities:

💫Responsibility.
💫Discipline.
💫Accountability.

For many people, hearing these words is uncomfortable.

For some, they feel rigid, harsh, or authoritarian.

For others, hearing them can even be triggering - bringing up memories of pressure, criticism, or being told they weren’t doing enough or not good enough.

The instinctive survival response is often to push these words aside, to dismiss them, to supress. Inevitably, they will resurface….louder, stronger, bolder!!

But here’s the interesting part: when something triggers a reaction, it signals that there’s something important below the surface that deserves attention.

Rejecting these ideas outright might also mean rejecting the very qualities that allow real change to happen.

What if we looked at them differently?

Responsibility is the ability to respond to Your life.
Discipline is you, a disciple devoted to learning and growth about You.
Accountability is the willingness to reckon with what is and clear Your stuff up.

What if we looked at these words not as restrictions, but as tools for empowerment?

Let’s see how they can transform your life when understood differently.

Responsibility: The Ability to Respond to Your Life

Responsibility is not about blame. It’s not about carrying the weight of everything that’s happened.  It’s about recognising that, no matter what has occurred, you could respond.

Why it matters

When you step into responsibility, you move out of helplessness or victim and into choice.
Without it, life feels like something that happens to you. With it, life becomes something you actively participate in shaping. This is where financial change begins.

Because until you acknowledge, “This is my life, and I can respond to it,” nothing truly shifts.

When to practice it

When you feel stuck or overwhelmed

When you catch yourself blaming circumstances, markets, partners, or past decisions

When avoidance starts creeping in around money

These are not signs of failure, they are invitations to return to yourself.

How to instil it

Start small.

Pause and ask:

What is actually happening right now?

What is within my control?

What is it I want and can choose today?

Responsibility is not about having all the answers. We all Fail Forward.
It’s about choosing to stay engaged with your life rather than disconnected from it.

Discipline: Devotion to Learning and Growth

Discipline has been misunderstood for a long time.  It’s not punishment.  It’s not rigid control. At its core, discipline comes from disciple, someone devoted to learning.  Its your learning, your growth.

Why it matters

Without discipline, intention remains an idea.

Discipline is what turns awareness into change.
It creates consistency, and consistency builds trust with yourself.

And for many women, this is the missing link:
not capability, but continuity.

When to practice it

When motivation fades (and it will)

When you feel resistance to doing the very things you know matter

When you’re tempted to fall back into familiar patterns

Discipline is most powerful not when it’s easy but when it’s not.

How to instil it

Shift the lens.

Instead of asking, “How do I force myself to do this?”
Ask, “What am I committed to becoming?”

Then anchor your actions to that identity.

Schedule regular “money dates” with yourself

Keep decisions simple and repeatable

Honour small commitments - this is how self-trust is rebuilt

Discipline is not about restriction. It is devotion to the life you are creating.

Accountability: The Willingness to Reckon with Reality

Accountability asks for honesty.  Not harshness. Not judgement. But truth. It is the willingness to see clearly and then clear things up.

Why it matters

Avoidance creates anxiety.  Clarity creates movement.

When you are accountable, you start working with it.

This is where freedom lives.

Because what you face, you can change. What you avoid, stays in control.

When to practice it

When you haven’t looked at your numbers in a while

When you didn’t set an intention, something that you know you shouldn’t have done

When you know a decision needs to be made but you keep postponing it

These moments are not problems - they are turning points.

How to instil it

Create structures that support truth.

Regularly review your financial position, without judgement

Ask: What needs attention? What needs to be cleaned up?

Seek support when needed, accountability doesn’t mean doing it alone

And most importantly:

Hold yourself in respect, not criticism.

Accountability is not about catching yourself out.
It’s about bringing yourself back into alignment.

The Shift

Seen this way, these qualities are not restrictive. They are expansive.

Responsibility grounds you in choice.
Discipline anchors you in growth.
Accountability keeps you aligned with what you truly value.

And when you embody them together…What once felt heavy becomes a source of personal power.

You lead yourself.
You honour your own standards.
You move forward with clarity, intention, and joy.

Because this is not about becoming someone else. It is about stepping fully into the woman you already are and the life you are now creating.

If you’re ready to finally step off autopilot and take control of the patterns that hold you back, there are two powerful paths to take:

The logical, structured approach – this is where mindset work lives. By mapping your behaviours, setting clear intentions, and using actionable strategies, you train your mind to respond differently. This approach strengthens your awareness, builds discipline, and helps you make empowered choices every day.  Work with the money coaching ‘me’. We all need support and mentoring at times.

The hypnosis approach – for those deeper beliefs that resist change and keep old patterns in place, hypnosis allows you to bypass the logical mind and reprogram the subconscious. This is where resistance melts away, triggers lose their power, and responsibility, discipline, and accountability start to feel like friends.  Work with me your  financial therapist.
